Violence in sports
Most people agree that sports have evolved over the years. The earlier notion of competition and playing "for the love of the game" seem to have been replaced by money, greed and a general disrespect for others. The most recent case highlighting these problems reared its ugly head in ice hockey, where Todd Bertuzzi laid a vicious blind-side attack on Steve Moore. The attack was so cowardly yet lethal that Moore suffered a concussion, cracked vertebrae in his neck and lacerations to the face - yet Moore is a lucky man because the neck injury could have left him paralyzed or even worse. Now this is not just a problem in hockey, we have also seen it in baseball with the infamous Zimmer and Martinez incident during the Red Sox vs Yankees brawl from last year. Add to that all this talk about steroid abuse and the general bad behavior of so many athletes, and you have to wonder if putting these guys on a pedestal is such a bright idea.
Rose inducted into Hall of Fame
Pete Rose was finally inducted into a Hall of Fame - the wrestling Hall of Fame that is! World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) inducted Pete along with former Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura and such wrestling greats as Bobby "The Brain" Heenan, Sgt. Slaughter, Tito Santana, and the Junkyard Dog. I am still scratching my head trying to figure out where exactly Pete Rose fits in here. Maybe he's just trying to push his new book.
Politicians speak on 'roids
We knew this was coming as United States Senator John McCain has given Major League Baseball an ultimatum on steroids - crack down on the practice by creating a comprehensive drug policy or have one forced upon you by the US government. Sen McCain made the threat after Donald Fehr refused to accept the his suggestion to agree to the more comprehensive drug policy for MLB, something along the lines of what is implemented in the NFL. MLB might be not be the only one behind the eight ball as the NBA and NHL have some ghosts in their closets as well.
