Jenny Finch & US Women's Softball Team Dominate at the Athens Olympics
There wasn't much competition for the powerhouse US Women's softball team as they had their way at the Athens Olympics. The softball team won its third straight gold medal with an unprecedented and nearly unblemished romp through the Olympics, capped by a 5-1 victory Monday over an Australian team, that, like the rest of softball's elite, never had a chance. A big part of their success is the star pitcher and blonde bombshell, Jenny Finch. Her dominating pitching saw many an opponent strike out without even having a chance to lift their softball bats from their shoulders. I can't remember seeing a more dominating pitcher at any level or a team play so well together.
Wrigley Field barely passes building code inspections
The Chicago Cubs play in a 90+ year old stadium and it is starting to show its age. The city gave the Cubs the go-ahead to play ball at Wrigley Field on Monday night after the stadium passed another round of inspections of repair work done on its crumbling upper deck. Chunks of concrete fell from the deck of the ballpark on at least three occasions since June, forcing officials to install protective nets and inspect the upper deck and mezzanine levels prior to their game against the Milwaukee Brewers. The inspectors though have warned the Cubs that these temporary nets will have to be replaced with more permanent fixes at the end of the baseball season. (I guess fans are expected to grab a hard-hat along with their next Wrigley hot dog and beer.)
IRS after Pete Rose
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) says that Pete Rose owes it over $1 million in federal back-taxes. It filed a federal tax lien in Broward County, Florida on Tuesday alleging that baseball's career hits leader owes $973,693.28 in back taxes from 1997 to 2002. According to Pete Rose's representatives, he has been making monthly payments on the debts though the IRS now has put a lien on his home and other pocessions.
