Jason Giambi makes an appearance
New York Yankees slugger Jason Giambi made a rare appearance in the Yankees clubhouse this afternoon. The former AL MVP has been plauged with a series of injuries and ailments. A nagging strained groin, a repiratory condition, a benign tumor and an intestinal parasite have written off Giambi's season and seriously threatened his baseball career. Giambi still isn't sure when he might be able to return to baseball again and this was the first time he has appeared with his teammates since July 27.
Padres to retire Gwynn's number
The San Diego Padres baseball club will retire Tony Gwynn's number 19 on September 4, 2004. Gwynn spent his entire 20 year career with the Padres and was for years their biggest offensive threat. He was a 15 time All-Star and had a career batting average of .338. Tony began his career with the Padres in 1982 and retired in 2001, with over 3,000 hits. He joins Dave Winfield, Randy Jones and Steve Garvey to have his number retired by the Padres. Gwynn will be eligible for induction into baseball's hall of fame in 2007.
